Simmons like

For me, the 1980s were these things:

•    The full colors of the rainbow

•    Motorcycles

•    Yamaha DX7

and

•    Simmons SDSV drums  !!!!

Of course, these are just the things from back then, that I felt the most..

So,  since I am a little obsessive with stuff, I made an effort to emulate the Simmons drums’ sound, you know : those piou-piou / pow-pow toms , the diz-diz snare and the ultra punchy noisy (or not)  kick !

Since there are thousands of free samples out there of the various Simmons drum modules, I tried a somehow different approach : to synthesize those sounds myself..

Do you remember the free STOMPER drumsynth, a while back? It was (and still is) one of the most versatile FREE drumsynths ever. You can make ANY drum sound and noise stuff you could imagine, from TRX0X sounds to (ahem) Simmons, and more. I personally think that even accidentally you may come up with a zillion different sounds, drums or strange stuff, possibilities are endless!

So, a lazy afternoon I got  into my TimeMachine and went back to my childhood, around 1984, I guess,..   So much music, so much feeling, so much freedom … there were no mobile phones, no internet, no computer screens, just living inside the music !!

aaaaaHH!!!.......................

….So, when I transferred myself back again into todays time, the year 2020, i decided to use this softsynth from the future: the Stomper Hyperion 5.01 !   

After a few hours of fiddling with it, I managed to create some sounds that I liked, so then I threw the result  into Kontakt, and so : the “XIMMONS” drumkit arised !! I called it “The Stomped Simmonz drumkit” .

It is not, by a long shot, an emulation of the SDSV drum synthesizer, but I dig the piou-piou toms I made, and I added also some noise to make the sound more “simmonslike” !!

 

I used 2 kiks, 2 snares and 2 sets of toms, and also some cymbals to make it complete. I added some basic controls for pitch tuning and a basic EG (attack & decay) so that sounds can be altered to some extent. Also a couple of extra sounds were added , one claps sound and a TSIOU (!!) noise !!..

The interface with the controls was created using a free tool made by Will Bedford, It is called KONSTRUKTOR and can be downloaded for free from http://willbedfordmusic.com/konstruktor.html.

The graphics background is an original Simmons SDS, edited somehow, and for royalty reasons, i ... rebranded it, and now it is called "XIMMONS" !!!

Experimental sampling

These days that i stay at home due to the coronavirus outbreak, i pass some time experimenting with various samples and trying to make Kontakt instruments out of them, just for practice..

Well, i reviewed again  the excellent http://bigcatinstruments.blogspot.com/  blogsite which has tons of various instruments, and i stumbled upon the OLPC  free soundsamples list .
A large variety of sounds, SFX, foleys, experimental, even some multisamples are there.

So, the following Kontakt instruments were created using sounds i sourced from this site.
Please read the README.txt file in the .rar files which has information about the source of the samples used.
Most of the samples were left alone, but i did some editing on some (sample start, fades, normalizing etc).

Concerning the ANIMAL DRUMKITS, I tried to use roundrobins, where multiple samples were available,  and i also applied different ADSR envelopes for each sample.

Alesis S4 for Kontakt select Instr2

The last few days, i sampled some more patches from my Alesis S4 Quadrasynth.
Some of them are edited by me to my personal taste, and made some KONTAK 5 instruments out of them.

In my opinion, these instruments are playable, and i already used them in some personal tracks i made.

The patches i made are :

1)   FatAnaLead program 17 :  
This is supposed to be played like a lead synth sound, but can be used also as a bass. I like it because it is sooo phat !    😘

2)   Fizz Bace_v127 :
This is very very Funky super-dirty bass !! During sampling i used only 1 layer (Velocity 127) and tuned the various velocities in Kontakt. It is a bass after all, and should be played LOUD !!!

3)   Player Pno program 41 :
Just a nice detuned (probably honky-tonk???) piano sound.. 😎

4)  Rezobass :
Kool resonant bass. The resonance effect is what i like best!
I tuned the pitch-bend for a full 12 notes (one octave) , for some WOW sweeps !! 😋

Alesis S4 for Kontakt select

Recently i acquired an ALESIS S4 Quadrasynth rack module.
Just wanted to add more 90s to my setup!!

Then, after i played alot with it, i thought that i wasn't too enthusiastic with ALL the sounds (anyway, i have ample 90s from my lovable SY85) but some, so i chose to sample my favourite sounds.  Reason is i need to sell some gear because i need the money (permanent problem..), so before i do, i don't want to lose some Alesis sounds that i love..

The 73 Tines is especially inspirational, also a patch called Tines Layer, which i kinda modified it a bit to my liking... Also Digi Tines .. Let's start with those first...

Don't get me wrong, the Alesis S4 Quadrasynth is an excellent synth with a lot of possibilities and great editing features which are easily accessible from the panel controls, without the neeed of any PC editor.
But, what can i say, i can't have every synth i like 'cause it costs money.. 😞

After a whole afternoon, i sampled the TinesLayer patch, with 4 velocity layers, and one sample every 3 keys.
Then i transferred all samples to KONTAKT and did some fiddling with the effects (added some Chorus etc), to my liking..

Well,... it seems to be very playable !! Congratulations to me !!!  😄


Tomorrow i will sample the Digitines (after i do some editing, 'cause it is a little thin and metallic as it is as a preset. to my ears, anyway..)

Oh yes, after i apply some final touches to the Kontakt instrument, i will post it for download. <<<<
